The Prayer of Simple Regard
Scripture
"Be still, and know that I am God."
— Psalm 46:10 (KJV)
Quote from Madame Guyon
"The prayer of simple regard is an interior quieting of the soul before God — not complex methods, but faith-filled presence. When sensing God's presence, stop — rest in that sweetness; do not rush forward."
Reflection
In our age of endless notifications and perpetual motion, the soul grows weary. We have mastered the art of doing, yet we have forgotten the deeper art of being.
Madame Guyon, that French mystic who knew imprisonment and persecution, discovered a secret that the world still desperately needs: God is not found in the multiplication of words, but in the simplification of the heart.
The "prayer of simple regard" is not a technique to be mastered. It is a surrender to be practiced. We learn to cease our self-effort — not as a passive giving up, but as an active faith that allows the Spirit to carry us into the depths of God's presence. Like a swimmer who stops fighting the current and discovers she is being carried exactly where she needs to go, we learn that true prayer is cooperation with God's work, not striving to achieve it ourselves.
This is not passive fatalism — it is the most active faith imaginable. It requires the courage to stop. To be still. To trust that God is already here, within the inner sanctuary of your soul, waiting not for your eloquence but for your attention.
Today, amid your tasks and troubles, remember: one moment of quiet regard is worth more than a thousand hurried prayers. The Lord does not ask for your efficiency. He asks for your presence.
Prayer
Lord, I cease my striving — not as one who gives up, but as one who finally allows You to work. This is not passive resignation, but active faith. I lay down my self-effort at Your feet, trusting that You are already at work within me. Teach me the prayer of simple regard. In the noise of this day, let me find the still point where You dwell. I rest in You. Amen.
