The Prayer of Simplicity: Finding God Within

Scripture

"But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly."
Matthew 6:6 (KJV)

Quote from Madame Guyon

"Prayer is the application of the heart to God, and the internal exercise of love. It is not the quantity that is read, but the manner of reading, that yields us profit. You must enter within yourself like the bee enters the flower to gather honey, not merely crawling upon the surface."

A Short and Easy Method of Prayer, Chapter I

Reflection

The world teaches us that more is better—more words, more effort, more striving. Yet the interior path reveals a different wisdom: less is more when the heart is truly present.

Madame Guyon, that poor vessel whom God used despite her imprisonment and suffering, discovered what the soul longs for in its deepest center. Prayer is not an intellectual exercise requiring theological training. It is the simple turning of the heart toward God who already dwells within.

In our modern age of constant distraction—notifications, deadlines, endless scrolling—we have forgotten how to be still. We approach prayer as another task to accomplish, another box to check. But true prayer begins when we cease our self-effort and allow the divine attraction to draw us inward.

This is not passive fatalism or spiritual laziness. Rather, it is like a swimmer who learns to float with the current instead of fighting against it. The swimmer does not stop moving; they stop resisting. This is active faith—allowing God to work within us rather than struggling through our own strength.

Begin today with just five minutes of inward recollection. Read a short passage of Scripture slowly—no more than half a page. When you sense the sweetness of God's presence, stop. Rest there. Do not rush to the next verse or manufacture spiritual feelings. Let the bee gather its honey in quietness.

The kingdom of God is within you (Luke 17:21). You need not climb to heaven or cross the seas. The Father waits in the secret chamber of your own soul.

Prayer

O Lord, teach me the prayer of simplicity. I lay down my striving at Your feet—not as a passive surrender, but as an active faith that trusts Your Spirit to move within me. Draw me inward, away from the noise of the world, into the silent chamber where You dwell. Let my heart find its rest in You alone, for You are the center that holds all things. Amen.
