The Interior Way: Finding God in the Center of Your Soul

Scripture

"Be still, and know that I am God."
— Psalm 46:10 (KJV)

Quote from Madame Guyon

"Prayer is the application of the heart to God, and the internal exercise of love. It is not the work of the mind, but of the heart. The simple, the ignorant, the unlearned, are often the most successful in this way of prayer."

A Short and Easy Method of Prayer, Chapter I

Reflection

In our age of constant distraction—notifications, deadlines, endless scrolling—we have forgotten something the mystics knew intimately: God is not found in the noise, but in the quiet center of the soul.

Madame Guyon, the 17th-century French mystic who wrote from prison, discovered that prayer requires no special education, no elaborate techniques, no spiritual gymnastics. What it requires is simpler and harder: the willingness to turn inward.

She taught that God already dwells within you, at the deepest point of your being. Not somewhere "out there" to be reached through frantic effort, but here, now, waiting in the silence beneath your thoughts.

This is not passive resignation. As Guyon herself clarified, "the man who is quiet, because his heart has perfect rest in God, is not a man who fails to fulfil his duty." Rather, it is active surrender—like a swimmer who stops fighting the current and discovers the water itself carries her forward.

Today, when anxiety rises, when your to-do list screams, when the world demands your attention—pause. Close your eyes. Turn inward. Speak to the One who already waits there. You need not perform. You need only present your heart.

The Kingdom of Heaven is within you (Luke 17:21). The mystics knew this. The question is: will we remember?

Prayer

Lord, I cease my striving. I turn from the noise without to the quiet within. Teach me to find You not in my efforts, but in my surrender. Let my heart be Your dwelling place. Amen.
